In the realm of Chinese mythology, there exist numerous enchanting stories that have captivated the imagination of people for centuries. One such captivating tale is that of Chang'e, the Moon Goddess who resides in a beautiful celestial palace on the moon. This legendary story has been immortalized in "China Mythology Stories 100," a collection of tales that reflect various aspects of Chinese culture and beliefs.
The Origin Story
According to ancient Chinese lore, Chang'e was once a mortal woman named Chang Jiang who lived during the Han Dynasty. She was known for her exceptional beauty and her love for an elixir called "ambrosia" which granted immortality to those who consumed it. Her husband, Ling Lun, discovered her secret and became jealous; he killed himself out of grief and jealousy.
Chang Jiang mourned his death by drinking all the remaining ambrosia from their home's alchemy cauldron. As she did so, she ascended into heaven where she met with Yu Huang (the Jade Emperor), who transformed her into an immortal goddess named Chang'e.
Her Lonely Residence
As time passed by, Chang'e grew lonely due to being separated from human life on Earth. She longed for companionship but could not return to Earth as doing so would break her promise with Yu Huang not to drink ambrosia again.
One day while wandering through heaven's vast expanse in search of solace or distraction from loneliness came upon two mortals - Hou Yi and his wife Fang Yao - who were also destined for immortality after consuming heavenly peaches gifted them by gods themselves; they had been sent back down onto earth as punishment because they were deemed unworthy by Yu Huang since they brought back some Heavenly Peaches instead returning them like others did before them.
Yu Huang ordered chang e (who now resided permanently among stars) & other gods to watch over these two humans until further notice; however chang e took pity on them & decided help them ascend up into heavens where only truly worthy individuals belonged if proven worthiness after trials set forth by chang e herself alongside other deities residing within heavens' realms
After completing their tasks given unto them both successfully ascending higher than ever seen before even reaching divine realms within heavens own cosmic seas – their names are forever etched onto stars amongst many great heroes throughout history known worldwide
