The White Snake: A Legend of Forbidden Love
In the vast and ancient land of China, where dragons soar and phoenixes dance, there exists a legend that transcends time and space. The story of the White Snake is one such tale that has captured the hearts of generations. It is a testament to love's power to conquer even death itself. This enchanting narrative can be found within "China's Myths 100," an anthology that delves into the rich tapestry of Chinese folklore.
A Tale Born from Mythology
The White Snake tells the poignant story of Bai Suzhen, a beautiful white snake spirit who falls deeply in love with a mortal man named Xu Xian. Their forbidden love sets off a chain reaction that ultimately leads to tragic consequences.
Bai Suzhen was once an ordinary woman who lived in ancient times. She was kidnapped by the Jade Emperor himself and transformed into a white snake spirit as punishment for her greediness towards his elixir for immortality. For centuries, she wandered alone until she met Xu Xian on Mount Emei.
Their whirlwind romance blossomed quickly under the guidance of another immortal being known as Zhu Que (the Red Boy). However, their happiness was short-lived when Xu Xian discovered Bai Suzhen's true nature upon encountering her rival for his affection – Xiao Qing (also known as Green Monkey).
Xu Xian fled from Bai Suzhen in terror but eventually returned after realizing his mistake and seeking forgiveness from her. Unfortunately, it was too late; he had already been cursed by Buddhist monk Fahai who sought vengeance against all evil spirits.
As fate would have it, Bai Suzhen could not bear to live without Xu Xian any longer than necessary so she begged Fahai for mercy only to be met with refusal once again. In desperation, she turned herself into water vapor hoping to find peace but instead became trapped between realms unable to return either as human or serpent form.
Tragedy Ensues
Xu Xian soon fell ill due to Fahai's curse which could only be lifted if he abandoned Bai Suzhen forever - something he refused steadfastly despite knowing this meant certain death if they were ever separated again.
Meanwhile, Zhu Que mourned over both their loved ones' suffering while Xiao Qing tried desperately with no success at finding any solution other than separating them completely because doing nothing would result in both dying out-of-love-and-in-sorrow respectively based on each individual’s desire & attachment towards each other rather than their shared longing together which seemed impossible given circumstances at hand now more so since none knew how they might still stay close despite distance etcetera though everyone wanted them together just like before you know?
In despair & anger over what happened next – during which time I'd never seen my friends act more selfishly ever before like they didn't care about anything except themselves let alone someone else’s feelings or pain nor did anyone try helping me understand why things couldn’t work out better even though we all agreed deep down inside our hearts we wanted those two reunited back together regardless no matter what obstacles stood in their way!
Tales Within Tales
This heart-wrenching story does not end here! There are tales within tales woven throughout its fabric adding depth & complexity while keeping readers captivated till very last moment possible without giving up hope believing always there must exist some kind way forward no matter how difficult life may seem sometimes indeed many people say stories teach us valuable lessons about ourselves too especially when faced challenges personally - just remember take your time thinking through decisions carefully think twice before acting impulsively then move forward slowly step-by-step you'll get somewhere eventually don't give up yet keep pushing forward always believe something good will come outta bad situation afterall!
